Facebook recently changed image sizes for ads, and link posts. This affects also to meta property="og:image"
. What is new optimal size for og:image
at Facebook? The old version was square, now it doesn't fit anymore, because new size is rectangle.
Open Graph image size The suggested size for a Facebook Open Graph image is about 1200 pixels by 630 pixels and should not be more than 8 MB, so remember to optimise the image. The recommended size is on the Facebook Developers page – Images in Link Shares. The minimum requirement is 200 by 200 pixels.
The most frequently recommended resolution for an OG image is 1200 pixels x 627 pixels (1.91/1 ratio). At this size, your thumbnail will be big and stand out from the crowd. Just don't exceed the 5MB size limit.
Facebook timeline photo and post sizes: Facebook automatically resizes and formats your photos when they are uploaded for the timeline to be 500 pixels wide and to fit the 1.91:1 aspect ratio. But avoid pixelation or slow load times by remembering these sizes: Recommended size: 1200 x 630 pixels.
If you're using a photo with an aspect ratio near 1.91:1 (such as 16:9), you can crop the sides to fit the required dimensions, and it will look just fine. Get stared by uploading the image to Kapwing's Studio. Once your picture is fully uploaded, click “Custom Size” and choose the “OG Image" preset option.
EDIT: The current best practices regarding Open Graph image sizes are officially outlined here: https://developers.facebook.com/docs/sharing/best-practices#images
There was a post in the Facebook developers group today, where one of the FB guys uploaded a PDF containing their new rules about image sizes – since that seems to be available only if you’re a member of the group, I uploaded it here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/ghqwhr
And they also said they will post about it in the developer blog in the coming days, so keep checking there as well
