In Android Studio 3.6 and above, an XML file always opens in the "Code" view by default. How do I make it open in "Split" view by default?
In Android Studio 3.6 if you open Preference->Editor->Layout editor you can see for this case only check/uncheck "Prefer XML editor" for show modes "Code" or "Design" view without "Split", very strange... Waiting for possibility check mode "Split"
Now Android Studio 4.0 has "Split" option. Nice! Now for Android Studio "Arctic Fox" - Preferences -> Editor -> Design Tools. Nice! Show activity on this post. Here's what worked for me, hope it works for you too. Close all tabs in your editors. Close the tab again. Android Studio then remembered my selection for all other tabs opened from then on.
Drag the new tab outside of Android Studio to create a floating window. In the new tab, select Design mode to make this window act as your floating preview. Finally, for those who used the Preview panel vertically by attaching it to the bottom of the text editor (particularly useful in vertical monitors).
Speaking of tool windows, the Split view contains all the tool windows you see in Design mode. In previous versions, the Preview tool window offered only the Palette tool window, which meant that you needed to switch back and forth from Text + Preview to Design to see your component tree, for example.
