I was having a discussion with a colleague on this topic. He thought that the new Gmail look was built with GWT. I can't seem to find a definitive answer. Anyone know for sure?
Google says it wants to make it easier to switch among its apps. Google is rolling out a new design for Gmail. Among the coming changes are a left-hand menu to quickly click into Chat, Spaces and Meet; easier filtering to find emails faster; and many shades of blue.
The new design is meant to better integrate programs like Meet and Chat and make them more accessible on Gmail's main landing page. Google said it didn't have details to share on when people won't be able to opt out of the new layout anymore.
Right-click on browser to view page source (when page is displaying your gmail inbox) says "no".

says Google Closure Javascript is the basis of many Google products, including gmail.
Gmail is not written in GWT or Java.
