For those of you who i18n, do you i18n the alt
attribute on your img
tags? Is it really worth it?
Adding alternative text to images on your site is a principle of web accessibility. Alt attributes enable screen readers to read the information about on-page images for the benefit of a person with complete lack of sight, visually impaired, or who is otherwise unable to view the images on the page.
How Does Alt Text Impact SEO? We've already highlighted that setting alt text for images is very important for SEO and is a key contributing search engine ranking factor. Alt tags provide context to what an image is displaying, informing search engine crawlers and allowing them to index an image correctly.
alt attribute is required for <img> tags if you want your markup to validate. Background images and bullets are just cosmetic, they don't need an alternate representation as they are not part of the content.
Alt text for informative images Informative images are any images that add to the context of a page. If the content of a page would suffer if an image was removed, then that image is informative and therefore needs an alt text. The alt text needs to describe the image as concisely as possible.
Well, I guess if you wanted your site to be truly i18n'd, then yes.
It might be an extra headache, but some vision impaired people out there are thanking you :)
Also, are you using i18n JavaScript strings too?
