Apple seems to have no documentation for how they pull the main image for your channel in Apple News.
This one here:
I have og:image tags on my site + the apple-touch-icon meta. I also have images in my RSS feed. It's showing up blank.
Any ideas?

Personalize your newsnext to the channels and topics you want to follow. next to the channel or topic. It will appear in a group near the top of the Today feed. If there's a channel or topic that you don't want to appear in your feed, touch and hold it, then choose Block Channel, Block Topic, or Stop Suggesting.
In the News app on your Mac, do any of the following: Choose File > Discover Channels, select channels to follow (the Plus button changes to a checkmark when you select something), then click Done. In the Today feed, click the Plus button next to a channel or topic, such as Science or Environment.
Turn on News in iCloud settings on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. On your Apple device, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud. Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID on all your devices. In the list of apps, turn on News (if it isn't already on).
Just to give you an answer, they told me that:
"You are not able to submit a custom cover image for your channel at this time. However, if thumbnails for images within your articles are properly referenced by the og:image tag, with dimensions of at least 600 x 400 pixels, the thumbnail from your most recent article will take the place of the colored tile."

You're now FINALLY able to choose the image yourself by going to the Apple News Publisher and then going to Channel Info > Cover
