As far as I know, there is not native or third party library available to play MIDI on the iPhone. But there seem to be quite a few apps that do exactly that. What are they using? Any clues?
This app is available only on the App Store for iPhone and iPad. Sweet MIDI Player is a MIDI player for not only auditioning all types of MIDI files, but for modifying the MIDI files themselves.
On a Mac, you open the "Audio MIDI Setup" program (it's built-in on OS X, in the "Utilities" folder of "Applications"). You'll want to be able to see the MIDI window, so select the "Window" menu and choose "Show MIDI Window" if you don't already see it. It will look something like this:
Double-click the "Network" tile there to see the configuration screen for your Wi-Fi MIDI setup. This is where you'll make sure your iPad connects to your desktop. The configuration screen will look like this: The "Directory" on the left is a list of devices that can connect with wireless MIDI.
MIDI should be a fairly simple format to work out what's going on, then you just need to play modulate your samples to play them like the song requested. Remember, MIDI dose not say what it HAS to sound like, only what it should play. It's up to your MIDI software/hardware to turn it into anything good.
FYI for those going down this road: AVMIDIPlayer was introduced in iOS 8. Seems to work well on device, sim not so much.
