How is the Google+ app's photo auto-backup feature implemented given iOS 6.x constraints? It seems to able to upload my Camera Roll photos even when I'm no longer running the Google+ app.
The iOS developer docs say, for short processes, "You need to perform a single finite-length task" and, for long-running processes, photo upload doesn't seem to be one of the approved uses.
When you turn on photo uploading in Google Photos, OneDrive, or Dropbox, one of the options is background uploading. You can go look at the settings for each app in Settings / General / Background App Refresh. You'll likely find that it's turned on for each app.
Google Photos does not auto upload when camera capture a photo; so you need open Google Photos to browse the album, then setup allow background refresh for Google Photos.
To turn on auto backup in Google Drive, head to Settings, tap on Photos, and then tap the toggle switch to turn on Auto Backup. You can choose whether photo uploads and video uploads will occur over Wi-Fi or a cellular connection or over Wi-Fi only.
From what I've observer, G+ app is using significant location change api to wake up app & update photo stream. See apple docs for technical info how to use this feature.
