I'm thinking of buying Martin Fowler's "Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture".
From what I can see it seems like a great book, an architectural book with bias towards enterprise Java -- just what I need.
However, in computer years, it is quite old. 2003 was a long time ago, and things have moved on quite a bit since that time.
So I'm wondering if anyone can tell me: is this book still relevant, and worth the read?
Yes, it is still very relevant and an excellent resource.
Even if you never encounter these problems, knowing patterns is still useful because it teaches you how to solve all sorts of problems using principles of object-oriented design. Design patterns define a common language that you and your teammates can use to communicate more efficiently.
An Enterprise Application Architecture is the coordinating paradigm through which an organization's IT assets inter-relate to form the computing infrastructure and support the business goals.
There are many different types of application architectures, but the most prominent today, based on the relationships between the services are: monoliths and N-tier architecture (tightly coupled), microservices (decoupled), and event-driven architecture and service-oriented architecture (loosely coupled).
Yes, it is still very relevant and an excellent resource.
