I am wondering why a 12 point Arial font, displayed on-screen in Mathematica, delivers output to my printer that is measureably smaller than 12 points when compared to output from other programs? I realize there has been some discussion of this behavior over in the Mathgroup moderated email list through the years, but I just haven't heard/read any really satisfying answers to this.
Now that I am using Mathematica 8.0.1 (Windows 7 64 bit) the behavior seems even worse. I have set the option inspector to use 16 point Arial, which is printing more like 10 point Arial.
Has anyone else noticed this behavior? Is there an obvious solution or work-around? I have even tried setting the magnification to 1.25 under the PrintingOptions portion of Option Inspector, and nothing changed, the printed output remained too small.
Each program that you try to print from, typically has an option to adjust the scale of printing. Make sure it is set to 100%, or fit to page, or no scaling. If your scaling is correct, then you need to check your Printing Preferences. To do this in Windows 10, go to your Printers & Scanners menu in Settings.
Your text is uniformly one point size larger than actually necessary, unless you are using a typeface with a very low x-height. Several typographers have opined that 9pt is the ideal text size, and it is generally accepted that captions are smaller than that (wouldn't go below 6pt, 7 is better).
Issues with font sizes could be caused by some of your printer settings. These settings generally revolve around the pitch and the lines per page that your printer is set to. Your printer should be set to a pitch of "16" and your lines per page setting set to "66".
Find your answer in this short guide. No, 10 pts is not necessarily too small. However, don't go any smaller because it will affect readability. Generally, a good font size for a resume is 10–12 pts.
I believe a typical style sheet has different settings for each "environment" (working, printout, slideshow, et cetera).
Try setting: File > Print Settings > Printing Environment
to Working
If you require different styles for screen and printing (Working
and Printout
) you can edit the style sheet sections for the Printout
environment to fine tune your results:
