I don't have much knowledge on mathml editors, we are already using rich:editor to edit html text. I have looked at the editors listed here, but unable to make a decision on what to use along with our existing richfaces editor
Equations are added to a drill by simply typing in or copying and pasting the MathML XML code into the edit screen. If Drillster recognizes your code as valid MathML, the text is automatically converted into a graphical representation of the equation.

MathType is currently a free add-in that can be utilized in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. While MS Word provides some math creation tools built in, MathType is the preferred method as it offers greater accessibility.
MathML is a low-level format for describing mathematics as a basis for machine to machine communication. MathML is not intended for editing by hand, but is for handling by specialized authoring tools such as equation editors, or for export to and from other math packages.
I quite like ASCII MathML as an input format for simple to moderately complex equations. While I don't use an online editor, I believe it should be possible to embed ASCIIMathML.js in your editor.
