I find it odd that Gmail.com uses Flash since Flash is considered lousy for the web (in many ways).
What did Gmail use Flash for?
Why wasn't that feature implemented with Java Applet or Javascript instead?
It really looks that GMail uses Flash to calculate Progress percentage when uploading a file. It than uses CSS to generate progress bar, therefore no Flash applet is used to display the Progress Bar. I discovered this by disabling Flash in IE9.
Nowhere in Gmail's source does it mention Flash. I did a little more digging and it appears that you need Flash though if you want to use the voice or video chat. It may use Flash in some advanced features in composition. Where do you notice you are in Gmail when the crash happens?
Gmail uses Flash for file upload and voice/video chat, I believe. Yes, it is needed for GTalk/Chat, but not for long. Google, Mozilla and Opera are putting a lot of effort into finalizing WebRTC (a W3C standard) for their browsers.

Along with various sexiness with attachments, as @ScottR mentioned:
...Flash is definitely used for video chat.
I think they use it for the upload progress on attachments.
