So lets say that you want to learn some stuff about database internals. What's the best source code to look at? the best books to buy?
I was talking about this with a buddy the other day and he recommended:
Art of Computer Programming, Volume 3: Sorting and Searching
What other books would help me learn about all the File IO and memory issues, pages, locking, etc.... ?

Simply, it reads through each candidate record in the database and matches the expression to the fields. So, if you have "select * from table where name = 'fred'", it literally runs through each record, grabs the "name" field, and compares it to 'fred'.
Most conventional relational databases use "row-oriented" storage, meaning that all data associated with a given row is stored together. By contrast, column-oriented DBMS store all data from a given column together in order to more quickly serve data warehouse-style queries.
Database design is the organization of data according to a database model. The designer determines what data must be stored and how the data elements interrelate. With this information, they can begin to fit the data to the database model. Database management system manages the data accordingly.

(I like the PG code better than SQLite , it's far more complete and, I think, better organized. SQLite is awesome for what it does, but there is a lot it doesn't take on).
