While answering another question about these parts, I became curious about the glyphs that might be obtained from the Unicode characters as displayed by the available fonts on the system.
Of course there are 65,536 Unicode chars, and over 250 fonts on a typical machine! Leaves one wondering where to start. What would be wonderful is an app. that allows us to browse tables of the code points of Unicode as displayed in ..any font selected in a list. It would be nice to also have:
Does such an app. exist?
It might look, well ..something like this!
To insert a Unicode character, type the character code, press ALT, and then press X. For example, to type a dollar symbol ($), type 0024, press ALT, and then press X.
Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then click Add/Remove Programs. Click the Windows Setup tab. Click System Tools (click the words, not the check box), and then click Details. Click to select the Character Map check box, click OK, and then click OK.
To check if a given String contains only unicode letters, digits or space, we use the isLetterOrDigit() and charAt() methods with decision making statements. The isLetterOrDigit(char ch) method determines whether the specific character (Unicode ch) is either a letter or a digit.
As with most things in Word, you can use either a keyboard shortcut or the mouse to see the hidden formatting characters. Keyboard, hit Control+Shift+8. Mouse, simply click the Show/Hide button on the Home tab.
