Is it possible to change gmail settings , create filter etc via some API ? I have searched through the internet and can find an api for gmail contacts and google calendar , but none for gmail settings etc ? Is such a thing possible ?

Go to the API Keys tab. Search for the API key in the list. Click/Tap the pencil icon for the API key. Update the properties of the API key.
The Gmail API is a RESTful API that can be used to access Gmail mailboxes and send mail. For most web applications the Gmail API is the best choice for authorized access to a user's Gmail data and is suitable for various applications, such as: Read-only mail extraction, indexing, and backup.
Note that the e-mail settings API is only applicable for Google Apps for Business or Education accounts (http://support.google.com/a/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=60228).
Have you found a way to change these settings - such as creating a filter - for gmail and free google app user accounts?
