I am preparing for an AWS certificate so I am reading about AWS services. The security section states there are both AWS Trusted Advisor and AWS Inspector, however, I couldn't understand the difference between them.
What is the difference between AWS Trusted Advisor and AWS Inspector?
The difference between Amazon Inspector and Amazon GuardDuty is that the former "checks what happens when you actually get an attack" and the latter "analyzes the actual logs to check if a threat exists". The purpose of Amazon Inspector is to test whether you are addressing common security risks in the target AWS.
How it works. Amazon Inspector is an automated vulnerability management service that continually scans AWS workloads for software vulnerabilities and unintended network exposure.
Open the Amazon Inspector console at https://console.aws.amazon.com/inspector/v2/home . In the Region selector, choose the Region in which you want to disable Amazon Inspector. In the navigation pane, choose Settings. Choose Disable Inspector.
In conclusion, Amazon Inspector is a tool with a lot of potential. As of now, I cannot recommend the exclusive use of Inspector as a vulnerability scanning tool, but it is definitely worth installing on at least a few of your AWS resources, as it is cheap and easy to use.
Trusted Advisor provides advice about your AWS Account in the areas of:
It highlights potential problems with the way you use AWS.
Amazon Inspector checks the configuration of EC2 instances. An agent runs on EC2 instances and checks operating system patches, known vulnerabilities, and common issues.
Therefore, the difference is:
AWS Inspector | AWS Trusted Advisor |
---|---|
Agent-based | Agent-less |
No impact on performance | Improves performance by checking service limit |
Free tier | Premium support |
EC2 configuration | AWS account & administrations |
No cost recommendations | Recommendations to optimize cost |
Scheduled | Real time guidance |
No impact on performance | Improves performance by checking service limit |
