I'm creating UML diagrams (use case and class diagrams) in Visual Studio 2010 for a new project. Instead of using drag and drop to place all the model elements in a visually pleasing way, I would like to automatically arrange the diagrams, to save time. Is that possible in Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate? In other VS2010 editions?
You can organize your diagrams by arranging the elements in them or by aligning the elements with each other or with rulers and grids. You can also organize elements in a diagram by sorting them alphabetically or by choosing to show or hide certain ones.
In Visual Studio, in the Solution Explorer, select a solution. On the Project menu, click Add New Item. In the Add New Solution Item dialog box, click Visio Files, and then click UML. Under Templates, click a UML diagram, and then click Open.
The current UML standards call for 13 different types of diagrams: class, activity, object, use case, sequence, package, state, component, communication, composite structure, interaction overview, timing, and deployment.
Rule 2: No Crossings This is a fairly common and well known rule. Try to avoid any two lines in your diagram to cross each other. It might be that you are showing two different aspects of the model in one diagram. In that case it might be better to create two different diagrams, each focused on one aspect.
Depending on the kind of diagrams you are making, there is often a Rearrange layout icon enabled in the Modelling toolbar. Also, right click on the background of the diagram to be able to find and select that option. However, I'm not sure if you are going to be satisfied of the result of the auto-arrange capabilities of VS2010.
For example, in the sequence diagram, click the layout icon left of Create Work Item:
(this is not available in the Class diagram)
Only the VS2010 Ultimate edition allows modelling projects, so that answers the second part of your question.
