Are there any good alternatives for Visio/PowerPoint for drawing architectural diagrams. Both Visio and PowerPoint are annoying to use even for some of the simplest tasks. wondering if someone out there has a better suggestion.

draw.io is completely free online diagram editor built around Google Drive(TM), that enables you to create flowcharts, UML, entity relation, network diagrams, mockups and more.
The status of Visio Web Access in SharePoint has changed. The service remains supported, but is deprecated. The retirement date for Visio Web Access in SharePoint* (in Microsoft 365) will be announced in the future. Microsoft recommends that customers migrate to Visio for the web.
Try diagrams.net (previously draw.io). It free and open source, it works natively in any browser and you can save locally or to Google Drive, OneDrive, Github and Gitlab. There's also a Desktop app for Window, macOS and Linux.
