Trying to figure out if Safari does or doesn't support iOS 11's new image format HEIC/HEIF. Have tried numerous things and it doesn't appear to work. Thanks.
Web browsersFor AVIF, Chrome, Firefox and Opera for desktop and Android support it.
HEIC files are typically smaller than average JPG or PNG files. However, many websites do not support the upload of HEIC files. Apple introduced HEIC files with its iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra software updates. Fortunately, converting HEIC images into the JPG format is easy if you have a Mac computer.
While it's tied to the Apple ecosystem and not very common on other devices, people often face the need to change HEIC to JPG to avoid incompatibility. Luckily, it is possible to convert HEIC to JPG on a Mac using native apps like Photos and Preview.
Its companion file format, HEIC, can encapsulate multiple copies of HEIF sequence data, and other non-photographic media. HEIF and HEIC files are created by the camera applications of modern Android and iPhone devices, and by professional grade digital cameras.
By checking on CanIUse, iOS11 dose't support HEIF in Safari, and I just have a test on iOS11.0.3, yep, it is really not supported.
On MacOS, it is supported on specified platform, which seems like KabyLake CPU, you can check it on WWDC.
