I am starting the emulator from the command line to try and speed it up a little, with these arguments:

In the updated emulator you don't have to remember the keyboard shortcuts -- they have added a side panel to the right side of the window. You can change the screen orientation by clicking either of the "rotate" buttons in that side panel. Just click on Rotate button to change the landscape to portrait and vice versa.
If the Android Emulator does not start properly, this problem is often caused by problems with HAXM. HAXM issues are often the result of conflicts with other virtualization technologies, incorrect settings, or an out-of-date HAXM driver. Try reinstalling the HAXM driver, using the steps detailed in Installing HAXM.
The reason why the designs look different is that the emulator's screen configuration is different to that which is used to render the design preview.
After I installed the Android SDK Tools 21.1 rc (in Preview Channel), the emulator with host GPU enabled works great now (fast and never upside-down).
Just launch Android SDK Manager and enable the preview channel in the settings dialog.
