A MIME type (also known as a Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension) is a standard that indicates the format of a file. It is a fundamental characteristic of a digital resource that influences its ability to be accessed and used over time.
A MIME type has two parts: a type and a subtype. They are separated by a slash (/). For example, the MIME type for Microsoft Word files is application and the subtype is msword. Together, the complete MIME type is application/msword.
There are two classes of type: discrete and multipart.
vnd indicates vendor-specific MIME types, which means they are MIME types that were introduced by corporate bodies rather than e.g. an Internet consortium.
vnd = vendor.
