Just having no luck with this regex

Question

This regex is supposed to validate if a URL is contained within a given message.

It's not even letting in messages of the form:

"test message......testing"

Here's the regex:

var re = /(http[s]?:\/\/){0,1}(www\.){0,1}[a-zA-Z0-9\.\-]+\.[a-zA-Z]{2,5}[\.]{0,1}/;

What am I doing wrong?

Why reinvent the wheel, steal!

Liberal Regex for matching URLs and Improved regex for matching URLs have nice commentary about the URL space and regex.

The original article suggested this regex:

\b(([\w-]+://?|www[.])[^\s()<>]+(?:\([\w\d]+\)|([^[:punct:]\s]|/)))

The improved regex enumerates TLD and is quite longer, but the code is well documented and explained in the second link above:
