Does anybody know if Google expose the new 'Popular times' information in the places API? and if not is there another API I can use to get a locations popularity?
To try out this feature, open Google Maps on your phone and search for the place you are heading to and scroll down past the description and phone number. You will find the 'Popular times' option, which will show you a chart of how busy that place is throughout the day.
All of the Placemeter data used in this study has a proven accuracy of at least 80%.
To determine how busy a place is, Google uses anonymized location data and real-time searches. When this information is not available, the company relies on past data to predict busy times. Complex algorithms extrapolate past and incomplete data to arrive at a good estimate. The busiest hour becomes the benchmark.
As of now (2016-12-15), no, as can be found at https://developers.google.com/places/web-service/details#PlaceDetailsResults. There's no other API for that information. You could use the API ratings return to do something alike, but still not the same.
You can track the existing requests for the feature (and star & bump it) at https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/35827350.
