Big line number columns in intellij

Question

My line number column width in intellij idea is weird.

Its a lot big when tabs are closed:

If I expand any of tab, it looks like this:

Is this feature or bug? How do I fix it?

I got this error in Build #IU-241.14494.240, built on March 28, 2024.

And turning off editor.distraction.free.mode worked for me but it was temporary. So when I restarted the IDE I got the same thing again.

Here's how I solved it, go to:

Settings->Advanced Settings->Left margin in distraction free mode

and if this value is -1, change it to 0.

So far I haven't encountered any problems, but it will take some use to see if it affects anything else.

Make sure "editor.distraction.free.mode" isn't enabled in Registry. Otherwise this is a bug: https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IDEA-148002
